Types of abstract art

Abstract art is divided into four main currents: geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism, lyrical abstraction, and organic abstraction. Let's look at each stream in detail:

geometric abstraction

Geometric abstract art seeks to be objective, rational and universal. That is to say, that the composition is structured, and that through geometry it avoids any expressiveness. This type of abstract art aims to be clear and precise. Furthermore, it is considered to have cubist and futurist influences. Its greatest exponent was the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The work "Tableau I" was one of his most iconic works. In fact, he was an emblematic icon of pop culture. In it, the artist combines primary colors with defined black lines, thus creating geometric blocks.

abstract expressionism

Abstract expressionism prioritizes the expressiveness of the artist. Aim for spontaneity, intuition and subjectivity. This type of abstract art, unlike geometric art, is not structured or planned. Prioritize improvisation, gesture, emotion and feeling. The greatest exponent of abstract expressionism is the American artist Jackson Pollock. This artist was a great defender of freedom of expression, as well as an opponent of conservative politics. On the canvases of his works, Pollock generates an explosion of colors through the dripping technique.

lyrical abstraction

This type of abstract art is focused on color, intuition and feeling. Geometry or any rational process is not used, but rather, on the contrary, it is totally free and spontaneous. It is a current that was influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism. Among the most prominent artists of lyrical abstraction is the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. One of his best-known paintings, "Untitled", made in 1910, is considered the first abstract watercolor. It is made with ink, pen and watercolor on paper, and in it, Kandinsky conveys emotions and feelings, through a harmonious composition between colors, shapes and lines.

organic abstraction

Organic abstract art represents organic forms, that is, forms found in nature, and which allude to other figures. These are generally rounded shapes or smooth geometric shapes. Organic abstraction is closely related to the currents of surrealism and existentialism. One of the most characteristic artists of this current is the Franco-German artist Jean Arp. He made a large number of abstract sculptures and paintings, and was one of the founders of the Dada movement.
